Let me start by introducing myself and Detroit Apron Company. I am Donna, owner and creator of Detroit Apron Company. I am a former pediatric nurse and perinatal educator. I love to sew and learned to do so from my 92 year old mother, Eva. She was one of 5 sisters from Italian immigrant parents. They all sewed and they all sewed very well! I started young, collecting scraps for doll clothes, hand sewing them while sitting on the floor next to my mother’s sewing machine as she sewed. I graduated to making my own clothes with meticulous instruction from Eva. If she told me to take it apart and redo it, I usually left it in a pile for her to do. I did not have the patience for that! But I’ve evolved and now have been known to take my work apart, and redo, on occasion!
So why aprons? I just love linen aprons! Crazy, I know. But let’s think about aprons. They are everywhere. You’ll see them in ads for small businesses, worn by craftsmen, artisans, bakers, chefs, artists. They signify hard work, enjoyable work, personal work, skilled work. Work is what we do! My mother always wears an apron when she is in the kitchen cooking. My grandmother had an apron on ALWAYS! People who worked with their hands and worked hard is what I was surrounded by. My father was a draftsman and small business owner. So here I am, working with my hands and a small business owner, I guess it's no surprise!
Here are a few of my aprons...
